The United States will impose tariffs on those countries with which it has not reached agreements, including Taiwan or the European Union, confirmed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday, July 6.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated on Sunday that tariffs on several trading partners would “jump” to levels that in some cases are very high, as President Donald Trump announced on April 2. This was before suspending the levies to allow for trade negotiations and setting a deadline of July 9 to reach agreements.

“We are close to several agreements. As always, there is a lot of slowness on the part of the other parties,” he added, referring to Trump’s statements, who pointed to a new deadline for imposing the tariffs last Friday.

“Well, I will probably start them on August 1, that’s pretty soon. Right?” said the president.

Trump assured on Sunday that some agreements had been reached with trading partners and that letters would be sent to other countries notifying them of higher tariff rates.
