What Are Trump Tariffs?

Trump tariffs refer to the import taxes introduced by former U.S. President Donald Trump, mainly between 2018 and 2020. These tariffs were part of his "America First" economic policy and were primarily aimed at reducing the U.S. trade deficit and bringing back manufacturing jobs to America.

The most notable tariffs were imposed on China during the U.S.-China trade war, targeting goods like steel, aluminum, electronics, and other industrial products. The goal was to pressure China into changing what the U.S. called unfair trade practices, including intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers.

However, these tariffs didn’t just affect China. Tariffs were also applied to goods from the EU, Canada, and Mexico at various times. While they were meant to protect U.S. industries, critics argued that they raised costs for American businesses and consumers.
