Operation 'Rising Lion':
In the early morning hours (June 13), Israel launched a wide-ranging aerial and cyber attack on Iran. Reports indicated that Israeli defense forces and Mossad targeted more than 100 sites, including nuclear facilities (such as Natanz), military installations, and residences of senior leaders. The strikes resulted in the deaths of the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Hussein Salami, the chief of staff of the armed forces, Mohammad Bagheri, and prominent nuclear scientists.
The Iranian counterattack:
Iran responded by launching more than 100 drones towards Israel. Israeli air defenses intercepted most of them, and Israeli authorities declared it a retaliatory step, while Iran described the strikes as a 'declaration of war'.
Global and regional repercussions:
Oil prices surged by 7-8% (with Brent crude reaching around $78 per barrel) amid concerns over the Strait of Hormuz. Financial markets experienced volatility, with Dow Jones futures dropping by about 450 points, and investors turned to gold, the US dollar, and bonds.
