The air raid sirens sounded throughout Israel as Iranian missiles struck the country in retaliation for the lethal attacks launched by Tel Aviv against nuclear facilities and military leaders. Iran's Revolutionary Guard confirmed that the attacks targeted dozens of sites in Israel.
At least 7 injured in central Israel from the Iranian missile attack, according to rescuers.
The roar of explosions was heard throughout Jerusalem this Friday, and Israeli television channels showed columns of smoke rising in Tel Aviv following an apparent missile attack. The military stated that dozens of missiles were launched and ordered residents across the country to take shelter in air raid shelters.
The attacks occurred amid latent tensions over the advancement of Iran's nuclear program. For years, Israel had threatened a similar attack, and successive U.S. governments had tried to prevent it, fearing it would trigger a broader conflict in the Middle East and possibly be ineffective in destroying Iran's dispersed and consolidated nuclear program.
Before the missiles hit Israel, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated during a broadcast speech that Israel initiated a war and assured that it would not be allowed to conduct lightning strikes without severe consequences; "the Armed Forces of Iran will use force and Israel will not be able to escape responsibility for its crimes," Khamenei declared.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that his country could help Israel defend itself from an Iranian attack "if it is in a position to do so" during a press conference following the Israeli bombings against the Islamic Republic.
