On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India. The flight was en route to London Gatwick Airport and was carrying 242 individuals—230 passengers and 12 crew members. The crash resulted in the deaths of 241 people on board, with the sole survivor being British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who was seated near an emergency exit and is currently receiving medical treatment .
The aircraft crashed into a hostel block at B. J. Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Ahmedabad, causing significant damage and resulting in at least 28 fatalities among individuals on the ground. Additionally, approximately 60 people were injured, including medical students and staff .
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and met with survivors and families of the victims. The government has launched a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the crash, with assistance from aviation authorities in the United States and the United Kingdom. One of the aircraft's black boxes has been recovered, and forensic teams are analyzing the wreckage to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the disaster .
