Trump intensified the trade war with China by raising base tariffs on imports from that country to 145% after April 9. He started a second trade war with Canada and Mexico, imposing a 25% tariff on most Canadian and Mexican goods, but later exempted all goods that met the requirements of the Agreement between the USA, Mexico, and Canada indefinitely. Trump called these actions a way to hold countries accountable for drug smuggling and illegal immigration, as well as to support domestic production. Later, he imposed a 25% tariff on imports of steel, aluminum, and automotive products from all countries, and it is expected that imported auto parts will follow.
