Debt held by the public stands at nearly $29 T, with the rest held intragovernment . Interest payments exceed $579 billion annually, now second only to Social Security in the federal budget . The fiscal year‑to‑date deficit sits near $1.4 trillion as of May 2025 . The U.S. credit rating was downgraded by Moody’s to Aa1 in May 2025, reflecting growing investor concern . America’s fiscal path remains concerning: annual deficits persist, debt is climbing faster than GDP, and debt servicing is consuming an increasing share of federal resources. Without reforms, fiscal pressures could intensify.
