Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Tencent have temporarily restricted access to generative artificial intelligence (AI) features during the gaokao entrance exams, which run from June 7 to 10, 2025. Bloomberg reports. The move is aimed at preventing cheating among the more than 13 million students for whom gaokao scores determine university admission. Services such as Doubao (ByteDance), DeepSeek, Yuanbao (Tencent), Qwen (Alibaba) and Kimi (Moonshot) have disabled image recognition and question answering features. Users are receiving notifications that the services are temporarily unavailable during these days.

Some students have expressed frustration at the use of AI to teach, but authorities and companies have insisted on ensuring the integrity of the exams. Several cities have also restricted movement and postponed events to ensure students can get to exam centers on time. The move underscores China’s seriousness about academic integrity and technology control. Stay tuned for AI and crypto news to stay up to date!
