In 2021, digital artist Mike Winkelman, aka Beeple, made headlines when he sold his non-replaceable digital artwork (NFT) titled “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” for a whopping $69.3 million at a Christie’s House auction. This sale placed Beeple among the top three living artists in terms of value, and was a significant moment in the digital art world.
"Everydays: The First 5000 Days" is a digital installation of 5,000 individual images created daily over 13+ years. The artwork was purchased by Vignesh Sundarisan, a Singapore-based cryptocurrency programmer and investor, also known as MetaKovan. Paid for the piece using 42,329 Ethereum (ETH). "Today, ""Everydays: The First 5000 Days"" panel on CoinGecko is priced at around 18.99 Ethereum (ETH), equivalent to $48518.
Non-replaceable Codes (NFTs) are unique files located on a blockchain that enable you to prove ownership of the digital artwork. Buyers usually get limited rights to display the digital artwork they represent, but they often buy up bragging rights and assets that they may be able to resell later. The technology has seen a tremendous leap over the past few weeks, and Winkelman, more than anyone else, was on the vantage of its rapid rise.
