Foresight News reports that 67-year-old retired artist Ed Suman fell victim to a phishing scam impersonating Coinbase customer service in March of this year, losing over $2 million in cryptocurrency, including 17.5 bitcoins and 225 ethers, which represented most of his retirement savings.
This scam occurred following a data breach disclosed by Coinbase this week, where attackers bribed customer support staff in India to obtain sensitive user information. The stolen data included customer names, account balances, and transaction histories, affecting about 1% of Coinbase's monthly active users. Coinbase's Chief Security Officer Philip Martin stated that the contracted customer support staff involved, located in India, were fired following the breach. The exchange plans to pay affected users between $180 million and $400 million in compensation and restitution.
