Reflection on the Crito Round Table: Voice, Ethics, and Responsibility
Today I attended the Crito Round Table, a discussion that raised classical philosophical values in a modern context. One of the most memorable quotes was from Socrates:
"We must not value either our children or our lives more than goodness."
From this discussion, there are three things that are very inspiring:
Ethics is not just discourse, but action. Socrates refused to escape punishment even though he knew it would save his life. His principle is steadfast: truth must not be compromised for comfort.
Social responsibility transcends personal interests. Socrates' decision emphasizes the importance of respecting the law and social agreements, even if it does not benefit him personally.
Dialogue as a space for growth. Crito represents the voice of concern and love, but Socrates directs the conversation toward what is just and true—not just what is desired.
This discussion made me realize that in a fast-paced and opportunistic world, the courage to stand for what is right remains relevant. What we do today will shape the moral order of tomorrow.
