Be Selective With Alts

Whether or not we get a full-blown altcoin season isn't the only consideration when buying altcoins. Even if we never see a proper altcoin season, there's always going to be some coins in some sectors that pop off. Even if we do get an altcoin season, certain coins will return bigger gains than others.

That means, worst-case scenario, you need to be much more selective. The last two years have proven that. You have to be willing to buy when attention is elsewhere for a shot at cashing in on the biggest multiples. It's risky but potentially rewarding. But that's always been the altcoin equation, hasn't it?

Today, let's look at which altcoins to buy in 2025, going sector by sector.

Disclaimer: Investing in altcoins is risky. You can literally lose all your money in an instant. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.

AI Tokens

One of the hottest sectors this cycle has been AI coins. When Bitcoin rallied over $90,000, altcoins followed, and the sectors with the biggest gains were AI agents, decentralized DeFi, and decentralized AI.

These tokens are attached either to AI agents or platforms designed around creating AI agents—launchpads, frameworks, or projects that combine AI and DeFi. Most are on Solana and Base, with a few other chains joining in.

Notable movers include:

  1. Zerbro

  2. Graffane

  3. Arc

  4. Anon

  5. AIXBT

Launchpads: AI6, Zed, and Virtuals are major players. To track mindshare, use the website CookieYes.

Fartcoin is currently at the top of the mindshare rankings—shocking.

Real World Asset (RWA) Coins

This is one of the biggest, hottest sectors in crypto and continues to grow. RWA coins bring trillions of dollars on-chain and are highly appealing to traditional finance.

Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, believes every asset can and will be tokenized.

Key projects to watch:

  1. Ono Finance – securing major partnerships

  2. Plume – layer 1 for RWAs, recently met with the SEC

  3. Clearpool – credit marketplace with current pre-deposit campaigns

  4. Ocean (Ozen) – building RWA infrastructure

Other names: Chintai, Rio Network, Link, Avalanche, Wormhole. These are middleware for RWAs and other sectors, so they tap into multiple narratives.

Memecoins

The memecoin circus has been full of highs, lows, and wild swings. Among the thousands, some names stand out:

  1. Fartcoin – also classed as an AI token, hit $2B market cap, crashed to $220M, now back over $1B

  2. S&P 6900 – popular pick

  3. Dog with Hat, Popcat, Pangu – strong recent rallies

Memecoins react quickly to market sentiment and soak up speculative money. They're not going away. High risk, high reward.

DeFi Tokens

One of the best-performing launches last year was Hyperliquid: peaked at $10.8B market cap, now around $6B, dominating the perpetual swap space.

Other DeFi-related tokens and platforms:

  1. Sonic – rebranded Phantom, DeFi-focused

  2. Barachchain – novel consensus mechanism: proof of liquidity

  3. Sky (formerly MakerDAO) – token buyback program

  4. Athena Labs – partnered with Securitize to build Converge, a new RWA chain

Other DeFi protocols with buybacks: Jupiter, Radium.

Gaming Tokens

Blockchain gaming is in the gutter right now, which might be the best time to look for strong plays.

Key gaming tokens:

  1. Gun – token of the Guns L1 gaming ecosystem, home to "Off the Grid" AAA title

  2. Immutable – partnered with Ubisoft for “Might and Magic Fates”

  3. Super – token of Superverse

  4. Beam – gaming network built on Avalanche, placing multiple strategic bets

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of cool coins doing cool things at interesting prices right now. Risk is still high—but that’s where opportunity lives.
