$ETH A major milestone has been reached on the Ethereum network with the activation of the long-awaited Pectra update, one of the most significant upgrades since the 2022 Merge. Rolled out at epoch 364032, around 6:05 a.m. ET, Pectra incorporates 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at boosting network efficiency, enhancing user experience, optimizing validator operations, and improving layer-2 scalability.

Pectra builds upon the Dencun update (released in March 2024), which introduced proto-danksharding via EIP-4844—a key step toward scaling Ethereum. With Pectra now live, Ethereum is better positioned for upcoming innovations such as the Fusaka upgrade, which will incorporate Werksley and PeerDAS trees to further increase scalability.

1. EIP-7702 – Account Abstraction:

This groundbreaking proposal allows Ethereum wallets to behave like smart contracts. Users can now:

  • Pay gas fees using third parties.

  • Interact with the network without needing to hold ETH.

2. EIP-7251 – Validator Balance Increase:

$ETH Raises the maximum effective balance for validators from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH, enabling larger stakeholders to consolidate validators. This reduces network load but also raises concerns about potential centralization, as large pools may gain more control.

3. EIP-7691 – Increased Blob Throughput:

Doubles the target blob capacity from 3 to 6 and raises the max from 6 to 9. This upgrade enhances layer-2 throughput for solutions like Arbitrum and Optimism, reducing transaction fees and improving scalability.

4. EIP-7002 – Validator Exit Management:

Allows validator exits to be triggered from the execution layer, reducing reliance on active keys and improving network security by protecting against key compromise.

5. EIP-2935 – Block Hash Storage:

Ensures that recent block hashes are stored in Ethereum’s state, not just in memory. This makes them accessible to smart contracts and improves integration with oracles, cross-layer protocols, and historical verification tools.

6. EIP-6110 – Faster Validator Activation:

Drastically reduces the time to activate new validators—from 12 hours to 13 minutes. This streamlines onboarding and benefits large staking operators.

  • EIP-7623: Raises data transmission costs to promote blob usage.
