South Korea has been actively refining its cryptocurrency policies to foster innovation while ensuring investor protection and financial security. In July 2024, the government enacted the Virtual Asset User Protection Act, mandating that exchanges store at least 80% of user deposits in cold wallets and maintain sufficient reserves to cover potential losses . The act also requires exchanges to segregate user funds and obtain insurance or establish reserve funds to address potential hacking incidents or liquidity crises . Additionally, South Korea is set to regulate cross-border cryptocurrency transactions starting in the second half of 2025. Businesses involved in such transactions will be required to register with authorities and report their transactions to the Bank of Korea on a monthly basis . This move aims to combat foreign exchange-related crimes, which have amounted to 11 trillion won ($7.97 billion) since 2020, with 81.3% involving virtual assets . Furthermore, South Korea is gradually allowing corporate participation in the virtual asset market. In February 2025, the Financial Services Commission announced plans to permit corporations to open real-name virtual asset accounts in phases, starting with law enforcement agencies, non-profit corporations, and virtual asset exchanges. The second phase, planned for the second half of 2025, will allow professional investment corporations to invest in virtual assets . These regulatory developments reflect South Korea's commitment to creating a secure and transparent environment for cryptocurrency activities, balancing innovation with consumer protection. #SouthKoreaCryptoPolicy
