Almost half of Americans rated Trump's performance unsatisfactory during the first 100 days of his second presidential term. In these 100 days, Trump not only unleashed a global trade war but also stated that he is 'not against' being remembered as the American president who expanded U.S. territories, clearly referring to his ambitions on Canada and Greenland. Moreover, to negotiate a freeze of the war in Ukraine at any cost, Trump is even ready to recognize occupied Crimea as Russian, violating international law, and lift sanctions from the aggressor. Not to mention that the USA voted against resolutions condemning military aggression and war crimes in the UN.
“Well, I said that metaphorically, as an exaggeration. People know that it was said jokingly,” Trump replied in a recent extensive interview when asked about his promises to end the war against Ukraine in 24 hours as soon as he becomes president of the USA. It has been calculated that during his campaign, Trump repeated 53 times that he would end the war 'in 24 hours'. So, it is very strange now to hear that this was said jokingly.
At a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, he even once said that he would end the war before his inauguration. It seems that in Trump's world, everyone has to do what he says. Therefore, he could genuinely believe that the war would end with some sort of agreement.
Horribly, but since Washington resumed dialogue with Moscow, it has exponentially increased the number of strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine, leading to even more Ukrainian deaths.
On Sunday, April 27, after negotiations at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome at the funeral of the Pope, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the USA would not impose additional sanctions as it would hinder the peace process. Despite statements from Trump himself and his cabinet that they were ready to increase pressure if the aggressor refused to cease fire and start real negotiations to suspend the war, numerous Western media reported that the current U.S. administration, on the contrary, offers Moscow economic incentives, including cooperation in the energy sector and other areas.
Recently, Marco Rubio stated that this week is critical and decisive. Trump added that he hopes to reach some peace agreement within the next two weeks.
