Why Haven’t All Bitcoins Been Mined Yet?
Although the maximum supply of Bitcoin is capped at 21 million coins, only around 19.7 million have been mined to date. This raises a common question: What is preventing the rest from being mined?
The answer lies in the design of the Bitcoin network itself. Its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, implemented a mechanism known as “halving”, which reduces the reward given to miners by half approximately every four years. This gradual reduction slows the rate at which new bitcoins are introduced into circulation.
