In an interview with Time magazine at the end of April 2025, President Trump stated that he discussed tariffs with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He mentioned that there are tariff negotiations taking place between the US and China, and that it is possible to "significantly reduce" the 145% tariff imposed on Chinese goods.

However, representatives from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Commerce firmly denied that any discussions about tariffs have taken place with the US. Their statement emphasized, "There have been no negotiations regarding tariffs between the US and China. The US needs to stop creating confusion."
