At the end of the day, uniting a community under one banner is a coordination issue — and coordination is a lot easier when there’s an element of centralisation. That’s why I’m not fully sold on the "hands off" decentralised community ethos. In practice, it often leads to disarray, where everyone just backs their own bags and no one pulls in the same direction. I think this is a big reason why Solana has exceeded Ethereum recently. Vitalik has stepped back from community leadership, and the vacuum has left hundreds of actors each chasing their own interests — which has fragmented the Ethereum community. Compare that to Solana, where Toly is rocking an SMB PFP. In other ecosystems, like AVAX, you'd see rival NFT projects crying “Unfair!! Why don't you rep my PFP instead?” But Toly gets it: leadership requires direction. Some may be upset, but the broader community aligns around the culture he’s signalling. And honestly, those shouting “unfair” are probably the ones worth filtering out anyway.
