In a bold statement that sparked widespread controversy, Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano and co-founder of Ethereum, predicted that the second largest blockchain network in the world may not survive the next fifteen years. This came during a live broadcast titled "Ask Me Anything" on April 23, where he described Ethereum's future as dark due to what he deemed wrong technical decisions and a lack of effective governance.
Hoskinson pointed to three main issues threatening the survival of Ethereum: an inefficient accounting model, a traditional virtual machine, and an unstudied consensus mechanism. He considered that adding layer two solutions and sharding increased complexity without real effectiveness.
In contrast, he presented Cardano as a stronger future alternative, emphasizing its superiority in terms of technology, such as the UTXO model, the Hydra engine, and the Midnight sidechain. He added that the reliance on decentralized finance on Bitcoin could overthrow Ethereum's dominance.
His statements opened the door to questions: Is Ethereum transforming from a legend in the crypto world to a new version of Blackberry? Are Cardano or Bitcoin the awaited heirs?
