Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a ceasefire along current front lines in Ukraine during peace talks with the U.S., reportedly offering to drop claims to four regions still held by Ukraine. In return, the U.S. may recognize Russia’s control of Crimea and parts of the contested territories. This is the first sign of Putin stepping back from key war goals since the conflict began three years ago. European officials, however, warn this may be a strategic move to pressure Ukraine and bolster Trump’s image with a possible diplomatic win.
