Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, has spoken out against the EU’s plan to weaken encryption by adding backdoors to messaging apps. He said that if Telegram is ever forced to break its privacy rules, it would rather leave those countries than give in. Durov warned that while backdoors are meant to help law enforcement, they can also be used by hackers and criminals, putting everyone’s private chats at risk.

He also made it clear that Telegram has never shared users' private messages. The only time the company has helped authorities is by providing IP addresses and phone numbers in serious criminal cases, and only with a court order.

Even though a similar proposal was recently rejected in France, Durov said the push to weaken digital privacy is still ongoing. He warned that the EU’s “ProtectEU” plan could seriously damage the core principles of cybersecurity.
