Criminal Crypto Gang Dismantled in São Paulo – With Binance’s Help
A major phone-theft and crypto fraud operation has been taken down in São Paulo, thanks to a powerful public-private partnership. The gang targeted individuals by stealing their phones, accessing personal data and crypto accounts, and committing digital fraud.
🚨 How it happened
Dubbed Operation Sleipnir, the investigation was led by CyberGaeco, São Paulo’s cybercrime division, in coordination with Binance’s Special Investigations team. Using advanced blockchain tracing tools, key suspects were identified and linked to stolen digital assets.
💰 On March 19, authorities executed search and seizure warrants, recovering:
BRL 260,000 in cash and crypto
Jewelry, documents, and devices – including phones tied to victims
🛡️ Strength in Collaboration
This successful operation is a reminder of the impact of global cooperation. Binance actively supported investigators with intelligence, tracking, and on-ground collaboration.
💬 "Cooperation between the public and private sectors is key in fighting crime, especially when it involves emerging technologies like blockchain," shared one lead prosecutor involved in the operation.
📉 According to recent data, cryptocurrency-related illicit activity has dropped significantly – with only 0.14% of crypto transactions in 2024 linked to crime, compared to 0.61% in 2023.
