As of April 16, 2025, trade talks between the United States and China have not resumed. The White House has indicated that the next move must come from Beijing, with President Trump stating that "the ball is in China's court" . China, however, has not engaged in negotiations and has instead responded with retaliatory tariffs and other measures.
The trade tensions have escalated significantly, with the U.S. imposing tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods, and China responding with tariffs of up to 125% on U.S. products . China has also taken steps such as halting orders of U.S.-made Boeing aircraft and restricting exports of critical rare earth elements .
Chinese officials have emphasized that they will only engage in talks if the U.S. demonstrates respect and a willingness to negotiate on equal terms . In the meantime, China is seeking to strengthen trade relationships with other countries, including the European Union, to counterbalance U.S. economic pressure .
