Mark Hardingham, Chair of the NFCC, highlighted the extensive consultation process behind the revision:

“Over 500 comments were received from stakeholders and leaseholder groups. The new edition provides clearer distinctions between general fire safety responsibilities and more intensive activities like continuous patrolling.”

He also noted a positive trend in the sector:

“Data from English Fire and Rescue Services shows a 63% decrease in buildings with a waking watch—from 773 in June 2021 to 288 in March 2022. This is a move in the right direction, and I hope it continues.”
