China has pledged to fight against U.S. tariff threats "to the end," after President Donald Trump hinted at increasing tariffs on its imports by 50% starting April 9, if Beijing does not withdraw its retaliatory measures. The mutual escalation has ignited global markets, leading to declines and disturbances in global stock markets, and raised fears of a global economic slowdown. In response, Elon Musk urged the Trump administration to back down, while Canada and Europe initiated diplomatic moves to address the repercussions of what is described as "the most dangerous tariff round in decades."
After U.S. President Donald Trump hinted on Monday at imposing an additional 50% tariff on China, effective April 9, if the latter does not retract its retaliatory tariffs, China's Ministry of Commerce has pledged that Beijing will fight the U.S. tariffs "to the end," considering the U.S. threats as "clear extortion."
A spokesperson for the ministry stated, "The United States' threat to increase tariffs on China is a double mistake that once again reveals the nature of extortion by the United States," affirming that his country "will never accept this. And if the United States insists on following its own path, China will fight it to the end."
