A well-known XRP community figure, Vet, recently highlighted an astonishing incident from 2017 where an anonymous user paid nearly **300,000 XRP** in transaction fees on the **XRP Ledger (XRPL)**.
According to Vet, the unidentified user executed **four transactions**, each incurring massive fees:
- **73,238 XRP**
- **75,742 XRP**
- **74,903 XRP**
- **74,068 XRP**
The total fees amounted to **297,951 XRP**, which was worth around **$65,549** at the time. However, at current prices, this sum would exceed **$700,000**, making it the **highest fee ever paid on the XRPL**.
### **Details of the Transactions**
Data from **XRPScan** reveals that the transactions occurred on **September 11, 2017**, originating from the address **‘rKLPB…57UGn’**. The purpose was to **cancel offers** on the XRP Ledger. Interestingly, the user made **five transactions** that day—four carried exorbitant fees, while the fifth cost just **0.21 XRP**.
### **Why Did This Happen?**
Vet speculated that a **bot handling the transactions may have malfunctioned**, possibly mixing up fields in the account script, leading to the abnormally high fees. Unlike some blockchains, the **XRPL processes any transaction as long as the fee meets the minimum requirement**, even if it’s unusually large.
### **XRP Ledger’s Normally Low Fees**
Such extreme fees are rare on the XRPL, where transaction costs are typically **negligible**. For example, Ripple once moved **$1.88 billion worth of XRP** for just **$0.0013** in fees.
Despite the costly error, Vet confirmed that the wallet remains **active**, holding a balance of **19.80 XRP**, with its last transaction recorded on **June 28, 2023**.
