#HackerAlert North Korea, with the help of the hacker group Lazarus Group, has become one of the largest holders of BTC in the world. As of today, hackers own approximately 13,518 BTC, equivalent to $1.16 billion. This is twice as much as El Salvador holds — a country that officially recognized Bitcoin as its national currency.
In the last month, Bitcoin reserves at Lazarus Group have increased after the massive hack of the cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, where they stole $1.4 billion in Ethereum ETH $1,891.87.
As of February 22, the group had only 778 BTC, but by March 4, this amount had increased to nearly 14,000 BTC. This indicates that the stolen funds were laundered through Bitcoin.
Lazarus Group is one of the most complex cybercrime groups to investigate, operating under the auspices of the North Korean government. American intelligence agencies, including the FBI, have repeatedly warned about the threats posed by this group, especially regarding their attacks on large cryptocurrency funds and exchanges.
The U.S. government also states that the stolen funds are being used to finance North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. Thus, cybercrime is becoming one of the key sources of funding for Kim Jong-un's sanctions regime.
