In 2016, one of the most high-profile incidents in the history of Ethereum occurred — the hack of the decentralized autonomous organization (The DAO) created on the Ethereum platform. Hackers stole about 3.6 million ETH (around 50 million dollars at that time). To recover the stolen funds, the community decided to conduct a "hard fork" (network split), which led to the emergence of two chains: Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC). Ethereum Classic preserved the original chain without changes, while Ethereum continued its development with the vulnerability fixed.
