"The goal of the kill switch is to reduce the available computational power of AI worldwide by 90-99% for one to two years, giving humanity time to prepare," Vitalik Buterin wrote in a blog post on January 7. "The value of one or two years should not be underestimated. It would be one year for 'working under complacent conditions' and the other year in a 'wartime state'."

According to the Ethereum co-founder's vision, the global AI pause button would be developed based on specific protocols, requiring the registration and verification of hardware locations. These systems would be equipped with a "trusted chip" that could only continue operating if authenticated by three signatures per week from major international organizations, including at least one non-military entity.
