Did you know that Bitcoin’s security relies on a math problem that would take billions of years to solve?

Bitcoin uses Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) to generate public and private keys. The private key is just a large random number, and the public key is derived from it using an elliptic curve function:

y^2=x^3+ 7 mod p

Reversing this (finding the private key from the public key) is called the discrete logarithm problem, which is so hard that even the world’s fastest computers would take longer than the age of the universe to solve it.
