According to the complaint, Trump violated campaign finance laws by encouraging users to buy Trump Coin just before his inauguration on January 20, 2025. Public Citizen representatives Bartlett Naylor and Craig Holman argued that this was not a typical investment promotion or product endorsement, but rather a case of personal exploitation, which constitutes a serious violation of ethical standards in public service.
In 2012, a report by the Congressional Research Service stated that while the president is entitled to receive public donations, he may not solicit or pressure others to contribute. If a Justice Department investigation confirms that Trump encouraged citizens to buy Trump Coin, he could face charges of abusing his power for personal gain.
