Attempted scam in Argentina for iris scanning in exchange for cryptocurrencies
Local media reports indicate that those involved, three women aged 36, 32, and 19, and two men aged 40 and 36, used a technique similar to that employed by Worldcoin, meaning they promised cryptocurrencies in exchange for allowing their iris to be scanned.
The group imitated the practices of Worldcoin (now World), but with the suspicion that they were attempting to hack the irises of passersby to appropriate their biometric data for illegal purposes. After being discovered, they were arrested and taken to the 8th Section of the province of Santa Fe for background checks. In the operation, 29 mobile phones, a Volkswagen Virtus car, and more than 600,000 Argentine pesos in cash (600 dollars) were seized.
