US-China trade tensions flare up with new tariffs
The United States and China have resumed their long-running trade fight by imposing a new round of tariffs. Following the US decision to impose a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, Beijing quickly responded with similar measures.
China will implement a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States, and 10% on crude oil, agricultural equipment and certain automobiles. These tariffs will take effect on February 10, 2025.
In addition, the Chinese government announced that it will investigate Google for alleged monopolistic practices and added US companies such as PVH Corp and biotech Illumina to its “unreliable entity list.” Export controls on minerals such as tungsten, tellurium and molybdenum, key elements for energy and electronic technologies, were also proposed.
