He died at the age of thirty-six and upon his death Gabriel came to the Messenger of God - may God bless him and grant him peace - and said: Who is this righteous servant who died? The gates of heaven were opened for him, and the throne moved for him, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was informed that he was Sa`d, he said to his companions: “Go to him.” Jabir said: “So he went out and we went out with him, and he hurried until the straps of our sandals were torn and our garments fell off. The companions were amazed at his speed, so he said: “I fear that the angels will get to him before us and wash him as they washed Hanzala.” So he reached the house and found that he had died and his companions were washing him and his mother was weeping for him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Every weeper is lying except Umm Sa`d.” Then they carried him to his grave, and when he was placed in his grave, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Allahu Akbar,” and the Muslims said, “Allahu Akbar,” until al-Baqi’ shook. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The grave has become narrow for your companion and has become so narrow that if anyone could have been saved from it, Sa`d would have been saved.” Then Allah relieved him, and when he returned from his funeral procession, his tears streamed down until his beard was wet. He also said: This righteous servant for whom the throne moved, the gates of heaven were opened, and seventy thousand angels witnessed him who had never descended to earth before.
