These are the 10 most indebted countries in the world, according to the IMF Brazil is far from the top 10 and first place is surprising
According to data released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in October 2024, Japan leads the list of countries with the highest debts in relation to GDP, with a ratio of 248.7%.
The debt-to-GDP ratio measures how much a country owes in relation to the total value of its economy. Calculated by dividing public debt by GDP, it indicates the government's ability to pay its obligations.
Sudan comes next with 237.1%, while Singapore occupies third place, with 175.8%.
The list also includes Greece (152.9%) and Italy (138.7%), traditional members of this ranking due to past economic crises.
Smaller countries, such as the Maldives (133.6%) and Bahrain (129.8%), are also among the most indebted, standing out for their economies dependent on tourism and oil, respectively.
The United States (124.1%), the Lao People's Democratic Republic (118.3%) and France (115.3%) complete the ranking.
Brazil's position Brazil, accused by many economists and political analysts of being a "spendthrift", is relatively far from the top 10, in position 23, with a debt of 92%.
With the deficit reduced in 2024, the Brazilian debt trajectory is downward, although many economists argue that the country should expand its spending base to promote the country's growth.
In November, debt fell to 77.7% of GDP, which would place Brazil in 43rd position, well below the average for developed countries (111%) and closer to the average for developing countries (71%). $AGLD $TIA #Write2Earn
