Il a emménagé dans un manoir en bord de lac, affrété des jets privés, acheté des yachts de luxe et organisé des fêtes somptueuses, racontant tranquillement à ses amis qu'il était juste un investisseur crypto chanceux et précoce.
La faille fatale : La blockchain se souvient de tout
L'empire de plusieurs milliards de Zhong ne s'est pas effondré à cause d'une opération de suivi high-tech. Il s'est effondré en raison de deux erreurs incroyablement basiques :
L'appel au cambriolage : En 2019, Zhong a ironiquement appelé la police pour signaler une effraction chez lui, mettant accidentellement son nom et son adresse sous le radar des enquêteurs en cybercriminalité qui surveillaient déjà les fonds volés de Silk Road.
L'oubli de 800 $ : Pour diviser son stock, Zhong a déplacé une infime fraction de ses fonds. Il a envoyé un simple transfert de 800 $ à un échange crypto centralisé. Pour finaliser la transaction, le compte nécessitait une pièce d'identité gouvernementale vérifiée.
Parce que la blockchain est un registre public permanent et immuable, les enquêteurs ont immédiatement lié ce seul compte vérifié KYC de 800 $ directement à l'adresse du braquage massif de 2012.
Le coup de grâce ? En 2023, Jimmy Zhong a plaidé coupable et a été condamné à seulement 1 an et 1 jour de prison fédérale. Pendant ce temps, le gouvernement américain a saisi plus de 50 000 Bitcoins, les a liquidés et a empoché des milliards.
