One of the more interesting design choices I came across recently is Bedrock’s approach to its uni standard, particularly with uniBTC and uniETH.
Most liquid staking discussions focus on yield, but the accounting model behind that yield is often overlooked.
Many users are familiar with rebasing tokens, where the number of tokens in your wallet gradually increases as rewards are distributed. It works, but it can sometimes create complexity when tracking positions, calculating performance or integrating with other DeFi applications.
Bedrock takes a different route.
With uniBTC and uniETH, the token balance itself does not grow over time. Rather, the value of each token increases as staking rewards accrue. In other words, the rewards are reflected in the token’s underlying value rather than through an expanding token quantity.
At first glance, the difference may seem minor. In practice, it creates a cleaner experience for many users.
Your wallet balance remains constant, accounting becomes more straightforward and integrations can often be simpler because protocols don't need to continuously account for changing token balances.
What becomes interesting here is that this shows a broader trend in DeFi infrastructure. As the ecosystem matures, projects are paying more attention to the user's experience at assets level, not just yield generation.
The goal is no longer simply earning rewards. It's about making those rewards easier to manage, track and utilize across multiple protocols.
Of course, neither model is universally better. Rebasing and non-rebasing designs each have tradeoffs depending on the use case. But Bedrock’s uni standard highlights how much thought is now being put into the mechanics behind liquid staking.
Sometimes innovation isn't about creating a new asset class.
Sometimes it's about making ownership itself cleaner, simpler and more efficient.
