🚨🇫🇷 FRANCE TARGETS CRYPTO SELF-CUSTODY: IS FINANCIAL PRIVACY AT A TURNING POINT? 🇫🇷🚨

Your keys. Your wallet. Your responsibility. But what happens when regulators want greater visibility into crypto holdings?

France is moving forward with legislative efforts to adapt its crypto-asset framework and strengthen financial transparency. A proposal introduced in July 2026 seeks changes to the country's legal and tax rules for digital assets.

France already requires residents to declare certain crypto wallets held with foreign service providers. Separately, legislation to approve international agreements on automatic crypto-asset information exchange is progressing through the French Parliament.

My Take: The key issue is the boundary between financial transparency and individual control. Self-custody allows users to hold their own private keys without relying on an exchange, but it does not automatically exempt them from applicable tax-reporting obligations.

The important distinction is that a legislative proposal is not automatically an enforceable law. The precise reporting requirements, scope, and implementation timeline must be confirmed through the final legislation.

If reporting obligations expand, crypto users may need better records of wallet ownership, transfers, and taxable transactions. For the industry, clearer rules could support compliance while raising legitimate questions about privacy and administrative burdens.

Do not assume that every self-custody wallet must now be reported. Existing obligations and proposed changes are different, and the final legal text matters.

Crypto ownership may be self-custodied, but legal responsibilities do not disappear with private keys.

Where should governments draw the line between tax transparency and personal financial privacy?
