According to Sina Finance, Saxo Markets Chief Investment Strategist Charu Chanana said Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama's recent comments on the yen were "basically just another round of verbal intervention." She added that unless there is substantive policy coordination, intervention, or a clearer tightening path from the Bank of Japan, the comments are unlikely to fundamentally change the yen's outlook.
Katayama said at a briefing after Friday's cabinet meeting in Tokyo that U.S. President Donald Trump had expressed concern about the yen's weakness during a recent U.S.-Japan summit. She also said Sanae Takaichi responded that there was indeed a problem with the yen being undervalued, and added that she would continue coordinating with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
