Durante años, la “contaminación” del Bitcoin fue el principal argumento de sus detractores: granjas repletas de ASIC devoraban electricidad y, según titulares alarmistas, “gastaban más que países enteros”. Dos años después, los datos cuentan otra historia. 
Estudios del Bitcoin Mining Council y de la Universidad de Cambridge estiman que, en 2025, más del 60% de la energía usada para minar BTC proviene de fuentes renovables, casi el doble que en 2021. 
¿Qué cambió y qué significa para América Latina?
Del carbón a los paneles solares
Mineras de Estados Unidos, Canadá, Paraguay o China occidental redirigieron sus operaciones hacia parques eólicos, represas hidroeléctricas y plantas solares flotantes. El caso emblemático es la granja fotovoltaica de Broken Hill, Australia: alimenta cientos de equipos con un generador 100% solar y ya sirve de modelo para proyectos similares en Catamarca o Chihuahua, donde la radiación solar es abundante y el terreno, barato.
Brasil, por su parte, experimenta con el “bitcoin hidroeléctrico”: turbinas que producen excedentes nocturnos venden esa energía ociosa a pools de minería instalados cerca de la represa y monetizan lo que antes se perdía. Investigadores de la UFRJ calculan que sólo con los excedentes de Itaipú se podrían añadir decenas de megavatios verdes a la red de minado global sin presionar la demanda local.
¿Marketing o compromiso genuino?
La sospecha de greenwashing persiste. Algunas empresas declaran “energía limpia” pero no publican su mezcla real. Para diferenciar discurso de práctica surgieron auditorías on‑chain: proyectos como Clean Incentive Registry registran en blockchain la procedencia de la electricidad de cada bloque minado, de modo que exchanges o fondos ESG puedan filtrar los BTC generados con fuentes fósiles.
En Estados Unidos, estados como Texas otorgan exenciones fiscales a quien acredite uso 100% renovable; en Paraguay se estudia una tarifa preferencial para mineras que operen con la energía sobrante de Yacyretá; y la Unión Europea discute un “sello verde” que premie con comisiones menores a los bloques certificados.
Ventajas económicas (además de ambientales)
Pasarse a renovables no es sólo cuestión de reputación. La energía solar o eólica contratada a largo plazo resulta más barata y estable que comprar electricidad spot basada en gas o carbón. Con los halvings reduciendo la recompensa, cada satoshi ahorrado en costos energéticos protege márgenes de beneficio.
A la vez, un mix energético más limpio neutraliza el riesgo regulatorio: los mineros que ya consumen verde no temen prohibiciones como la vivida en 2021 en la provincia china de Sichuan, donde se clausuraron granjas por su dependencia del carbón.
La respuesta de los críticos
Quienes aún cuestionan al Bitcoin destacan que su consumo total —aunque ahora sea más limpio— sigue siendo alto. Sin embargo, estudios recientes comparan peras con peras: la red Visa gasta más energía que la minería si se incluye toda su infraestructura bancaria, cajeros y centros de datos. Y, a diferencia de la banca, el Bitcoin destina la mayor parte de esa energía a asegurar un sistema que cualquier persona puede auditar y usar sin permiso.
Además, cuando la minería absorbe excedentes que de otro modo se desaprovecharían (gas quemado en yacimientos de shale, electricidad vertida en horas valle), actúa como comprador de último recurso y estabiliza las redes.
América Latina se sube a la ola verde
Paraguay – Grupos canadienses instalan granjas junto a represas para aprovechar la sobreoferta hidroeléctrica.Argentina – Patagonia atrae mineras que utilizan viento y frío natural para refrigerar equipos; la provincia de San Luis lanzó un hub de criptominería con paneles solares.México – Empresas locales negocian con CFE la instalación de contenedores mineros en parques eólicos de Oaxaca, reduciendo picos de generación no consumida.
Los gobiernos ven un doble beneficio: ingreso fiscal y financiamiento de energías limpias, sin subsidios directos.
Minería sostenible: el nuevo estándar
La competencia empuja a los operadores a migrar hacia lo verde; los inversores institucionales exigen métricas ESG; y los reguladores preparan incentivos que favorecen a quien demuestre bajas emisiones. 
El resultado es un círculo virtuoso: cuanto más renovable es el mix, mayor la legitimidad y la adopción del Bitcoin.
El impacto ecológico ya no es la mayor amenaza para el BTC
La transición energética de la minería no es un mero gesto de relaciones públicas: reduce costos, atrae capital institucional y desarma el argumento ambiental que frenaba a muchos países y empresas. Si el oro —símbolo histórico de reserva de valor— depende de maquinaria pesada y diésel para extraer unas cuantas onzas, el Bitcoin de 2025 se mina, en su mayor parte, con sol, viento y agua.
Queda camino por recorrer: aumentar la transparencia del suministro eléctrico y expandir infraestructuras renovables en regiones con energía sucia. Aun así, el proceso ya parece irreversible. En la próxima década, el debate público sobre el BTC girará menos en torno a “cuánta energía consume” y más a “cuán limpia y eficiente puede llegar a ser”.
