It’s been exactly one year since the $19 billion flash crash.
And the crypto market’s report card is deeply counterintuitive: BTC and ETH order book depth has fully recovered to pre-crash levels, while altcoin liquidity is still bleeding.
A newly released report from CoinDesk Research (measuring order book depth within 1% above and below the price; January 2025 = 100):
The BTC depth index has climbed to 170, ETH to 139, while the altcoin basket is at just 87—not even back to the baseline.
The head of research at CoinDesk put it bluntly: market makers are back, but only in the top coins.
What this means:
Liquidity is oxygen for institutions. Market makers are willing to commit real capital to BTC/ETH order books, which suggests this so-called wave of “institutionalization” has only opened the door for the biggest coins.
For retail traders, the reality is that the harder altcoins rally, the more important it is to check their depth: gains propped up by thin liquidity can be magnified just as much on the way down, making the cost of chasing a rally higher than you might think.
Don’t just watch price moves—take a look at order book depth, too. On the eve of the CPI release, the market has already voted with its feet.
BTC is currently trading sideways around $82,000, but order book depth varies wildly from one coin to another.
What’s the split in your portfolio between BTC/ETH and altcoins? Let’s talk in the comments.
