Babylon’s Bitcoin timestamp service actually hides a very counterintuitive design: it’s not meant to tell Bitcoin what happened, but to help the Cosmos ecosystem remember undeniable evidence in a time series. I only realized this when I recently dissected the light-client logic—if you imagine BABY’s PoS chain as someone continuously writing a diary, then the BTC timestamp is like, every so often, taking that day’s newspaper and a photo of the diary together. The newspaper date can’t be forged, and the moment the diary is captured in the photo is permanently fixed. Many people focus on economic returns, yet overlook the fact that timestamps are the quiet anchor point of the entire trust system. Without this anchor, the cost of long-range attacks would drop dramatically, because an attacker could quietly simulate a complete historical chain. But with the BTC newspaper front page as a reference, any rewritten script afterward will reveal a time discontinuity. Later, I found that this design also pushes the security boundary in a very interesting direction: it doesn’t rely on raw computational power to directly outmuscle attackers, but on irreversible information writing that leaves attackers with nowhere to hide in the time dimension. In other words, this mechanism uses Bitcoin’s on-chain time as a public lie detector. And this is also what I think is BABY’s true product feel: it doesn’t make the PoS chain beg Bitcoin for protection via hashpower—it only borrows that tamper-evident timeline to complete final confirmation of history.
