Musk predicts that AI will surpass the total sum of all human intelligence in about five years. At that point, unless the world suffers a major catastrophe such as a global nuclear war, the world will enter an astonishing era of prosperity—where people can almost have anything they can imagine. When asked whether his earlier judgment of the “probability of AI catastrophic runaway” of 10% to 20% still holds, Musk replied that it does, likening it to a rocket: “If a rocket had the same explosion probability, I would still get on it. If you assume you can’t do anything about it, the only thing you can do is reduce the probability of a bad outcome as much as possible.”
