CZ comments on the Coldcard stolen-coin incident: hardware wallets are not absolutely secure; there is no 100% risk-free solution

On August 1, Binance founder CZ, on social media, shared his views on the alleged vulnerability in the Coldcard hardware wallet that reportedly led to over $38 million worth of Bitcoin being stolen.
He noted: even hardware wallets can have security vulnerabilities, and even long-established, reputable products cannot be immune. Perhaps the risk can be reduced by diversifying funds across multiple wallets, but doing so also creates new security concerns. Yesterday I celebrated a profitable trade on $KOMA. A few hours later, liquidation reminded me that the market always has the final word. While taking a break before looking at $IDOL, I spent some time digging deeper into @BabylonLabs_io io, and one detail completely changed my perspective.

I used to think the hardest part of a Trustless Bitcoin Vault was getting everyone to coordinate offchain. Multiple participants, signatures, and transaction preparation sounded like the real bottleneck.

Surprisingly, that isn’t what ultimately decides when a vault is ready.

The protocol deliberately waits for Bitcoin to do what Bitcoin does best: provide finality through confirmations. Offchain coordination can finish early, but the vault still depends on the required Bitcoin confirmation depth before moving toward activation.
