In the protected Brdy region, south of Prague, the Czech army had once dug drainage canals that dried out the local wetlands.
In 2018, the authorities devised a barrage project to restore these marshes and protect the Klabava River from acid pollution and sediment, at a cost of 30 million Czech crowns (about $1.2 million). The project received approval, but then got bogged down for seven years in construction-permit issues and land disputes.
In January 2025, while the authorities were still negotiating administrative authorizations, they discovered that a colony of about eight beavers had already built several dams on the same site, creating an even larger wetland area than planned, with ponds and channels favorable to frogs and to crayfish native to streams, a rare species.
Local officials themselves acknowledged that the beavers had beaten them to it, without plans, without permits, and without a single cent of public money.
