U.S. President Donald Trump said that, in his view, Russian President Vladimir Putin is under pressure and is interested in ending the war against Ukraine. The American leader said this in response to journalists’ questions after he was reminded of the latest Russian strikes on Kyiv.
During a conversation with the press, Trump was asked whether he believes the head of the Kremlin was put under pressure after their recent phone call, despite Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukrainian territory. In response, the U.S. president expressed confidence that Putin is seeking to end the war.
“I think he is indeed under pressure. He wants to end this war, and Ukraine also wants to end it. We are in negotiations and will see whether it is possible to bring the conflict to an end. This is a terrible situation,” Trump said.
During his remarks, the American leader also once again noted that, as he said, he had previously managed to help bring an end to several armed conflicts, emphasizing his experience in resolving international crises.
According to Trump, the negotiation process is ongoing, and he believes the parties may end up closer to achieving peace than it might seem at first glance.
“I think we are much closer to this than many might imagine. President Putin wants to end this war — I can say that with complete confidence. We had a very good conversation. President Zelensky also wants to end the war as soon as possible. We will discuss this issue at the NATO summit as well. I think we have a chance to put an end to this conflict,” the U.S. president said.
Recall that a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place on July 4. One of the key topics of the talks was Russia’s war against Ukraine and possible ways to bring it to an end.
