🇮🇳 After 'Mr Prime Minister...' gift for Modi, #TRUMP stresses '200% tariff' threat ‘stopped India-Pak war’ 🇺🇸

US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that his tariff threats “stopped a potential India–Pakistan war”, even as trade talks between Washington and New Delhi continue amid tensions.

The remarks came just two days after Trump sent Prime Minister Narendra Modi a framed photo of the two leaders with a handwritten note reading: “Mr Prime Minister, you are great!” — a gesture highlighting their complex yet cordial relationship.

Speaking to reporters while en route to Israel, Trump said his tariff policies gave the US “diplomatic and negotiating strength,” claiming that his threat of imposing 100–200% tariffs on both India and Pakistan pushed them to back away from escalation.

“If I didn’t have tariffs, you could have never settled that war,” Trump added, referring to the May conflict scare he believes he helped defuse.

India, however, has firmly denied any third-party mediation, maintaining that its Operation Sindoor ceasefire was a sovereign decision following a terror attack in Kashmir.

Despite his praise for Modi, Trump’s administration has hit India with steep trade tariffs — including 50% import duties and a $100,000 H-1B visa fee — citing oil trade with Russia and market restrictions. His team continues to push India to open its farm and dairy sectors as part of an ongoing trade deal negotiation expected to enter a sixth round soon.

Ties between the two nations have swung between warmth and friction. While Trump has lauded Modi as a “personal friend,” he’s also accused India of being a “primary funder” of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Still, October brought a softer tone: Modi praised Trump’s Gaza peace efforts, and US envoy-designate Sergio Gor personally delivered the signed photo gift in New Delhi.

Two days later, Trump was back in headlines — renewing his claim of stopping the India–Pakistan war through #TrumpTariffs .
