The technological backbone of Mitosis is its sophisticated modular architecture, a design philosophy that is fundamental to its mission of unifying liquidity across the blockchain ecosystem. Unlike monolithic blockchains that handle execution, consensus, and data availability on a single layer, Mitosis separates these functions to achieve superior flexibility and interoperability. This design is implemented through a hybrid structure that leverages the strengths of two major ecosystems: Ethereum and Cosmos.

The execution layer of Mitosis is fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This strategic choice allows developers to deploy smart contracts and build decentralized applications (dApps) using the same familiar tools and languages they use on Ethereum, such as Solidity. This significantly lowers the barrier to entry and encourages a rich ecosystem of DeFi applications to develop on Mitosis. In contrast, the consensus layer is built using the Cosmos Software Development Kit (SDK) and utilizes CometBFT (a version of Tendermint) for achieving fast and reliable Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus. This bifurcation allows Mitosis to nimbly adopt future upgrades from both the Ethereum and Cosmos ecosystems, ensuring long-term adaptability and security.

A critical component that brings this architecture to life is its integration with Hyperlane, which serves as the protocol's permissionless interoperability layer. This integration is what enables Mitosis to function as a central liquidity hub. The process begins when users deposit assets from any supported chain into Mitosis Vaults. These vaults are smart contracts that securely lock the underlying assets. In return, the user receives a 1:1 representative token, known as a miAsset (e.g., depositing eETH yields miETH). These miAssets are minted on the Mitosis Chain and are the key to creating programmable, cross-chain liquidity. To maintain a single source of truth for all cross-chain activities and prevent inefficiencies, the Mitosis Chain employs a Mitosis Ledger Module, which records all cross-chain activities, ensuring consistency and reliability across the network. This modular, hub-and-spoke model is the foundational infrastructure that allows assets to be seamlessly tokenized and moved across different blockchains, effectively tackling the core problem of liquidity fragmentation.
