Kim Jong Un Signals Openness to Talks — But Rejects Denuclearization
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced that he is willing to re-engage in talks with the United States, but only under new conditions. Kim made it clear that he will not consider giving up the country’s nuclear weapons, calling them an essential shield for national survival. He described US insistence on denuclearization as an “absurd obsession.”
At the same time, Kim reflected positively on his previous summits with Donald Trump, recalling them with what he called “fond memories.” His comments suggest he is open to diplomacy, but only on terms that recognize North Korea’s nuclear status.
South Korea has responded by proposing a step-by-step approach. Seoul believes freezing new weapons development could be a first step toward rebuilding trust and preventing further escalation in the region.
This statement from Kim shifts the narrative: instead of denuclearization, the focus may now move to arms control and gradual confidence-building. The big question is whether Washington is ready to change its stance, or if the deadlock will continue.
