JUST IN: 🇬🇧🇮🇱 UK Rules Out Genocide in Gaza, Scholars Disagre
The UK government, in a letter from former Foreign Secretary David Lammy, has concluded that Israel’s actions in Gaza do not meet the legal definition of genocide, citing insufficient evidence of intent to destroy a group under the Genocide Convention. Lammy nevertheless described the bombings as “utterly appalling.”

The International Association of Genocide Scholars passed a resolution (Aug 31, 2025) declaring Israel is committing genocide, citing 59,000+ civilian deaths, mass infrastructure destruction, aid deprivation, and official rhetoric.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has previously noted a “plausible risk of genocide.”
This divide highlights the growing international legal and political battle over how to define Israel’s war in Gaza.
